Windows 98 Set-Up Instructions


Make a Dial-Up Connection to InterComm


Step 1

Double left-click on My Computer.
Double left-click on Dial-Up Networking.
Or: Click on Start.
Select Programs.
Select Accessories.
Select Communications.
Single left-click on Dial-Up Networking. If Dial-Up Networking does not appear in Accessories or in My Computer, go to Install Dial-Up Networking.

Step 2

Double left-click on Make New Connection.

(If this is the first time you’ve opened Dial-Up Networking, Make New Connection will automatically start.) Name the connection: InterComm Click Next. Enter the appropriate dial-up number to InterComm. 56kbps V.90/KFlex, 33.6 & lower 775-332-3888 56kbps, Douglas County (CALL US) Click Next. Click Finish.

Step 3

In Dial-Up Networking: Single right-click on the InterComm icon. From the menu: Single left-click Properties.    

Step 4

Mark Use Area Code and Dialing Properties. Click the Server Types tab.

Step 5

In Server Types: Advanced options: Ensure only ENABLE SOFTWARE COMPRESSION is checked. Allowed Network Protocols: Check TCP/IP, only. Click on the TCP/IP Settings button.  

 

 Step 6

In TCP/IP Settings, mark the following: Server assigned IP address. Server assigned name server addresses. Use IP header compression. Use default gateway on remote network. Click OK to exit TCP/IP Settings. Click OK to exit InterComm properties.

 Step 7

Single right-click on the InterComm icon. Click on Create Shortcut. A message will appear and ask if you would like to place the shortcut on the desktop. Click Yes. An icon labeled Shortcut to InterComm will appear on the desktop. You can now close Dial-Up Networking.


Disable Call Waiting


(If you do not have call waiting, skip to the next section.)

Step 1

Double left-click on the Shortcut to InterComm on your desktop.

Step 2

The Connect To screen will open. Click on the Dialing Properties button.

Step 3

The Dialing Properties window will open. Check "To disable call waiting, dial:" From the drop-list, select *70,. Click Apply. Click OK.  


Network Configuration


Step 1

Double left-click on My Computer. Double left-click on Control Panel. Double left-click on the Network icon. Or: Click on Start. Select Settings. Double left-click on the Control Panel icon. Double left-click on the Network icon.    

 Step 2

The following should be in the large white box: Microsoft Family Logon Dial-Up Adapter TCP/IP (If any of these network components are missing, go to Add Network Components.)   These settings are correct. Continue with Step 3 to check your TCP/IP Properties. These are very important

Step 3

Single left-click on TCP/IP to highlight it. Left-click on Properties.

Step 4

In TCP/IP Properties there are several tabs. Click on the following 4 tabs, and make sure the appropriate settings are in place. IP address: Obtain an IP address automatically. WINS Configuration Disable WINS resolution Gateway (Nothing but a flashing cursor.) DNS Configuration Disable DNS When you have finished configuring the TCP/IP Properties: Click OK to exit TCP/IP Properties. Click OK to exit the Network window. If asked to restart your computer, click Yes.


Connecting to InterComm


Step 1

Double left-click on Shortcut to InterComm.        

 Step 2

To set-Up automatic dial-up to InterComm: Type in your user name in lowercase. Type in your password. Check Save password. Check Connect automatically. Click Connect. Go to Step 3.

 Step 3

After you have set-up your computer for automatic dial-up, just double left-click on the Internet Explorer icon. Your computer will automatically connect to InterComm and launch Internet Explorer.


Troubleshooting


Adding Network Components

***Windows 98 CD required in most cases.***

 Step 1

(If any components are missing, complete the following steps.) In the Network window, remove all components. Single left-click on each entry and click Remove.   When the Configuration box is clear, click Add.  

 

 Step 2

In the Select Network Component Type window : Single left-click Adapter. Click Add.

Step 3

In the Select Network Adapters window: Choose Microsoft from the left and Dial-Up Adapter from the right. Click OK. After a moment, in the Network window you should see:
Microsoft Family Logon Dial-Up Adapter TCP/IP Click OK. Your computer may ask you for your Windows98 CD. Once all the files are copied, click Yes when it asks to restart your computer. Continue with step 2 of Network Configuration on page 3.


Install Dial-Up Networking


Step 1

Insert the Windows 98 CD or disks into the computer and wait a few seconds. If the Windows 98 splash screen automatically appears: Click on Add/Remove Software. If the Windows 98 screen does not appear: Double left-click on My Computer. Double left-click on Control Panel. Double left-click on Add/Remove Programs. The Add/Remove Programs Properties window will open. Click on the Windows Setup tab. Double left-click on Communications.

Step 2a

If Dial-Up Networking is UNCHECKED: Check the Dial-Up Networking checkbox. Click OK to exit Communications. Click OK to exit Add/Remove Programs. Restart your computer when prompted.

Step 2b

If Dial-Up Networking is CHECKED: Uncheck the Dial-Up Networking checkbox. Click OK to exit Communications. Click OK to exit Add/Remove Programs. Restart your computer. Repeat Step 1 on this page.

Step 3

Continue with Step 1 on the first page.

  • Make sure your username is typed in all lower-case letters. Verify that your CAPS lock is not on.
  • Make sure your password is typed exactly as it appears on your InterComm receipt. Remember that the server is case-sensitive.
