Windows 95 Configuration

Step 1 - Making a Dial-Up Networking Connection for InterComm

From the Start menu, left-click on Programs --> Accessories --> Dial-Up Networking.

Note: If Dial-Up Networking is not shown on the Accessories Menu, see
Adding Dial-Up Networking.

If the Make New Connection wizard does not automatically appear, double-click on Make New Connection. Type InterComm as the name of your connection. Select your modem from the list and click Next.

Enter InterComm's access phone number that applies to your type of modem:

Reno/Sparks/Carson: (775) 332-3888
Douglas County: Call for number

Click Next, then click Finish.

A new icon called InterComm will appear next to the Make New Connection icon.

Right-click on InterComm, and left-click on Properties. Confirm that the phone number is correct from the list above. If you have call waiting on the phone line you will be using to dial InterComm, you will need to enter *70, before the phone number or you may be disconnected when someone tries to call you.

Click on Server Types.

Choose PPP: Windows 95, etc. from the list box.

In the Advanced Options area, uncheck Log On To Network and Enable Software Compression. These options prolong the time it takes to make a connection and can cause problems.

In the Allowed Network Protocols area, uncheck IPX/SPX and NetBEUI; only TCP/IP should be checked.

Click on TCP/IP Settings.

Make sure that Server Assigned IP Address and Server Assigned Name Servers are selected.

Verify that Use IP Header Compression and Use default gateway on remote network are both checked.

Click OK, click OK again.

Finally, right-click on the InterComm icon again, and click on Create Shortcut to create a shortcut to your InterComm connection on your desktop. You will see a warning message confirming that you want to place the shortcut on you r desktop. Click Yes. Continue with Step 2.

Step 2 - Network Configuration

Windows 95 users will need to take the following steps to properly configure the networking drivers. If you have an existing Local Area Network (LAN) where you are directly connected to one or more computers, do not reconfigure your Network settings without first speaking to your System or Network Administrator.

From the Start menu, click on Settings --> Control Panel, and double-click on Network.

From the Configuration window, you will see "The following network components are installed:"

The required components include: a client, "Client for Microsoft Networks"; an adaptor, "Dial-Up Adapter"; and a protocol, "TCP/IP".

If any of the three items are not installed, see
Adding Network Components.

Click on TCP/IP, and click on Properties.

The first tab is IP Address. Select Obtain an IP address automatically.

Click on the tab WINS Configuration. Select Disable WINS Resolution.

Click on the tab Gateways. Make sure there are no installed gateways.

Click on the tab DNS Configuration. Select Disable DNS.

Click on OK.

Click on the Identification tab. Occasionally you have to enter the identification of the computer. Decide on a name for your computer, for example:

Finally, click OK, and the computer may install some files and prompt you to restart. You may need your Windows 95 CD/disks. Once your computer is restarted, you are ready to connect to InterComm. Continue with Step 3 for instructions on how to connect.

Step 3 - Connecting to InterComm

Double-click on Shortcut to InterComm from your desktop.

Enter both your user id and password into the appropriate boxes, and click OK. Make sure that you type the information exactly as it is shown on your receipt, as our server is case sensitive. Remember that your user id is always lower case, but your password may be upper and/or lower case. Click connect.

A series of messages will appear showing the status of the call to InterComm. Once connected, you may see a box showing Connected to InterComm. Or, the box may drop to the bottom of the screen. You know you are connected to InterComm by the small picture of two computers in the bottom right corner of the taskbar underneath the time. If you have trouble connecting, go through the setup instructions again and make sure all the settings are correct. If you still are unable to connect, write down the error message that appears so when you call technical support we can effectively help you.
