FTP FAQs

Uploading your web page

After you create your website, you need to transfer the files to our server so the world can access your page. This is accomplished by using an FTP (File Transfer Protocol) program. A good FTP program we recommend is WS_FTP, however you may use any FTP program if you are familiar with a different one already. See our downloads page to get a copy of WS_FTP.

There are 3 basic items that any FTP program needs to connect to our server.

  1. The server name (users.intercomm.com)
  2. Your Username   (First part of your email address)
  3. Your Password

Once you are connected to the server, you will be automatically placed in your root directory. This is the folder where you need to place all your pictures and web page files.

Here are screenshots of WS_FTP:

When you first open the program, this box pops up on top. Enter the information as follows:

  • Profile Name:  This can be anything you choose.
  • Host Name/Address:  users.intercomm.com
  • Host Type:  Automatic Detect
  • User ID:   Your username
  • Password:  Your password (shows up as asterisks)
The Account and Comments fields are left blank.

The left side of the screen shows the files on your hard drive. The right side shows the files in your root directory on our server. When you created your website, you saved the html files to a location on your hard drive. Navigate to this location on the left side of the WS_FTP screen. You can type in the direct location using the ChgDir button, or click to the location. Double-clicking on the green arrow at the top of the list on the left results in movin g up a directory. If you stored your files on a floppy disk, double-click on the [-a-] located at the bottom of the list on the left.

Now, on the right side of the screen, double-click on the html folder. You'll notice the directory path at the top has changed. This is the folder where you place all pictures, html files, sounds, etc.

To transfer the files, simply highlight them on the left (you can select multiple files by holding down the mouse button) and click the right arrow in the middle of the screen. You will see an indicator as each file is transferred. Once all files have been copied, our server instantaneously makes the webpage visible to the world.
